Experimenting with Timber Joints
My Practice Joints
Rebated But Joint
The positive features of my joint are the sides line up (not overhanging) and it is very strong and secure.
The negative features of my joint are it is not at a right-angle how it should be and there is also a slight gap between the two pieces of timber.
The common applications of the joint are boxes or frames and constructing furniture. It can be used on any wooden object as log as there are not large amounts of stress or weight on the joint.

Finger/Box Pin Joint
The positive features of my joint are the joint does not need glue to stay secure as it fits perfectly, it is a perfect right-angle and there are also no overhangs.
The negative features of my joint are there is a slight gap where the pieces join and the pin is a bit short and does not come right to the edge of the timber.
The common applications of the joint are to make long pieces of timber by combining two smaller pieces. It is also used when making chairs and doors, as well as joining floorboards.

Dovetail Joint
The positive features of my joint are it does lock into place, it is at a right-angle and there is no overhang.
The negative feature of my joint are there are some small gaps between the two pieces of timber, there are a few chips out of the wood and there is quite a large split in the joint.
The common applications of the joint are making drawers, boxes, frames (tables) and all over cabinet construction. They can also be used in the neck and bodies of guitars. They are used widely in woodworking because they cannot be pulled out from two sides.

Dowel Joint
The positive features of my joint are it is at a right-angle and there is no gap between the two pieces of timber.
The negative feature of my joint is it does have an overhang.
Common applications of the joint are frames, boxes, cabinets and carcases. The most common way of using dowels is when widening timber. Dowels are widely used because of there strength, neatness and are very quick and easy when you drill the holes correctly.
